Some people think that personalised number plates are a waste of time and the owners of the cars sporting them are egotists. However there are many instances when they make good sense, consider the coach or bus operator who does not want his passengers to see that his fleet, although in good condition is getting a little old, or the undertaker whose vehicles are immaculate, do very little mileage but their number plates give away their age. Normal drivers also have the advantage of always knowing their registration number when asked and also can find their car with ease in a car park.
