Working Late on Cindy’s Birthday

My husband ended up having to work late on our daughter’s birthday. He had promised to be there by six, but at half past seven there was no sign of him. He had called and told me that there was a chance he would be late, of course, but that didn’t change the reaction. He had been missing more and more events lately, and I was afraid my little girl was losing her faith in her daddy. Instead of crying, however, my daughter was livid, storming around the room like an angered sprite. Very suddenly, she went to the living room and grabbed the phone book, ripping through pages on her search for the right business. When I asked her what she was looking for, she said she was looking for a divorce attorney in Sacramento. When I asked why, she said that her friend Megan had told her that they had hired some attorneys for her dad last year. Apparently, after the attorneys came, she got double the presents from both parents, two bedrooms, and her father always came to every sports game, birthday party, and big event. That night I told my husband what she had done. He hasn’t missed an event since.
