Chinese Accent Reduction-Pronouncing the “ih” Sound
Chinese Accent Reduction-Pronouncing the “ih” SoundHere is a Chinese accent reduction tip. Pronouncing vowel sounds in American English can be a challenge for many individuals who speak English as a second language. Native Chinese speakers often have difficulty pronouncing the American English “short i” or “ih” sound, as it is called, as in the word “sit.” Instead of “ih”, this sound is often pronounced like “ee.” This means that the word “sit” sounds like “seat.” As you can see, the vowel difference from “sit” to “seat” actually created a different word. In conversation, this means that the Chinese speaker’s speech may be difficult to understand or misinterpreted.
